When there’s sufficient leucine and other amino acids in your body…

But leucine is only a signal.

Being bedridden is one of the most destructive states for the human body.
Especially for an elderly body.
That’s because bed rest greatly accelerates muscle loss.
For instance…
Whereas a young adult confined to bed will lose 1% of his or her total muscle mass per day…
A bedridden elderly person loses a staggering 5% of his or her strength and muscle tissue every 24 hours.
Yes, that’s really bad.
In fact, NASA scientists studying the effects of muscle-wasting on its astronauts found that…
“10 days of bed rest is equivalent to 30 years of aging on your muscles.”
Down here on earth, this means…
Even a short spell of inactivity can turn a healthy 40-year-old into a frail 70-year-old in a matter of days.17
One NASA scientist described this muscle-loss as “horrifying.”

OK, back to the study…
The bedridden patients were divided into two equal groups.
Group 1 received 3 grams of HMB daily. Group 2 (the Control) received dummy placebo pills.
After 10 days, researchers measured the body composition of all participants with a DXA scanner.vii
vii. DXA stands for Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry – a scanner that measures a person’s fat tissue, muscle mass and bone density.
Here’s what the astonished researchers found.
Every patient in the Control group (non-HMB) experienced a significant decrease in muscle size and strength.
Yet, in the HMB group…
The HMB preserved the muscles and strength in the overwhelming majority of patients.18
